Alice Berger nacque nel 1906 in una famiglia nella quale era la più piccola di 4 figli e nella quale al padre che era un trasportatore durante la seconda guerra mondiale furono sequestrati i cavalli.
Subito dopo le elementari Alice si ritirò in casa e più tardi iniziò a lavorare nel negozio di scarpe che la sua famiglia aveva aperto.
In quel negozio entrò da cliente quel Louis Altmann che sarebbe diventato suo compagno per la vita e che le insegnò a giocare a Bridge rivelandone l'immenso talento.
Straordinariamente portata per tutti i giochi di carte, Alice divenne presto una giocatrice di classe mondiale capace di vincere nel 1937 l'argento negli Europei a Squadre Femminili ed il bronzo in quelli a Coppie Miste.
La coppia che aveva avuto un figlio nel 1944, dovette nascondersi per sfuggire alla cieca furia nazista fin quando Budapest non fu liberata.
Nel 1956 per sfuggire all'invasione russa si trasferirono a New York dove Alice aveva dei parenti.
Dopo quasi venti anni di interruzione, Alice riprese a giocare vincendo spesso delle gare regionali giocando in coppia con il marito, ma, dopo la di lui morte, si dedicò principalmente al Rubber Bridge destando l'ammirazione degli esperti del tempo compresa quella del grande Reese.
Alice si spense nel 1997.
Alice Berger was born in 1906 into a family where she was the
youngest of four children, and in which the father was a carrier during World
War II were seized horses.
Immediately after the elementary Alice retreated into the house and later began working in the shoe shop that his family had opened.
In that shop came how customers Louis Altmann who would become her companion for life and who taught her to play Bridge revealing the immense talent.
Extraordinarily reach for all card games, Alice soon became a world-class player who won silver in 1937 in the European Team Championship and bronze in European Mixed Pairs.
The couple had a son in 1944, had to hide to escape the Nazi blind fury until Budapest was liberated.
In 1956 to escape the Russian invasion moved to New York where Alice had relatives.
After almost twenty years of interruption, Alice began to play winning some regional competition but after the death of her husband devoted herself to the Rubber Bridge arousing the admiration of the experts of the time and also that of the great Reese.
Alice died in 1997.
