Nato a New York il primo dicembre del 1935 come Allan Stewart Konigsberg  è un regista, sceneggiatore, attore, clarinettista, compositore, scrittore e commediografo statunitense tra i più celebri umoristi dell'era moderna.

 La sua produzione cinematografica è impressionante e conta quasi un film l'anno! diversi prodotti dalla sorella Letty. Nel 1995 ha ricevuto il Leone d'oro alla carriere al Festival del cinema di Venezia.

 Allen si è sposato tre volte, la prima a soli vent'anni con  Harlene Susan Rosen che aveva solo 17 anni e che suonava il pianoforte nel trio jazz che avevano messo insieme, la seconda con Louise Lasser un'attrice comica, la terza con Soon-Yi Penn, la figlia adottiva dell'attrice Mia Farrow con cui ebbe una relazione durata 12 anni, dando vita ad uno scandalo che fece epoca.

 Tuttavia, per sua stessa ammissione, il grande amore della sua vita fu l'attrice Diane Keaton con cui non convolò mai a nozze.

Scrisse anche alcuni libri di successo nei quali ha saputo cogliere brillantemente le contraddizioni della società statunitense e di quella globale.

Giocatore di bridge a lui si deve il celebre aforisma "il bridge è come il sesso, se non hai un buon partner devi avere una buona mano".
