La Swedish Bridge Federation fu creata nel 1933 perché
i club di bridge esistenti lavorassero insieme per selezionare una squadra che
rappresentasse la Svezia nei campionati europei di bridge.
Dopo sette anni (1940), la nuova federazione iniziò a organizzare campionati svedesi in varie categorie, la prima delle quali era l'Open Pairs.
La storia della Federazione del bridge svedese include una serie di fatti interessanti: le bidding box furono introdotte nel 1963; il sistema di punteggio fu ideato e implementato nel 1966; la serie nazionale è iniziata nel 1976; un sistema di handicap (come nel golf) è stato introdotto nel 2005 per fornire uno strumento più rilevante per valutare la forza di un giocatore.
Un'altra importante decisione è stata quella di creare il festival annuale del bridge.
Il primo evento è stato organizzato nel 1994 e dall'inizio doveva ospitare un evento di squadra internazionale (Chairman's Cup), la maggior parte delle finali nazionali per coppie e molti eventi collaterali per giocatori di tutte le categorie.
Lo Swedish Bridge Festival è oggi uno dei più grandi eventi svedesi con oltre 8500 tavoli in gioco durante i 10 giorni dell'evento.
Attualmente la Federazione svedese del bridge conta circa 28.000 membri e quasi 400 club di bridge.
The Swedish Bridge
Federation was created in 1933. The main reason was that the existing bridge
clubs needed to work together in order to select a team to represent Sweden in
the European Bridge Championships.
After seven years (1940) the new federation started to arrange Swedish championships in various categories, the first one being the Open Pairs.
The history of the Swedish Bridge Federation includes a number of interesting facts: the bidding box was invented 1963; the master points system was devised and implemented in 1966; the national team series started in 1976; a handicap system (as in golf) was introduced in 2005 to provide a more relevant tool to evaluate the strength of a player.
Another major decision was to create the annual bridge festival. The first event was arranged in 1994 and from the start the idea was to host one international team event (Chairman’s Cup), most of our national pair finals and many side events for players in all categories. The Swedish Bridge Festival is today one of the biggest Swedish annual events with more than 8500 tables in play over the 10 days of the event.
Currently the Swedish Bridge Federation has approximately 28 000 members and almost 400 bridge clubs.
