Questa convenzione poco nota in Italia è stata ideata dal grande campione americano Eric Rodwell per sviluppare meglio le sequenze nelle quali il Rispondente riceve l'aiuto al suo colore.
Le due sequenze interessate sono:
Nord Sud Nord Sud
1♣♦ 1♥ 1♣♦ 1♠
2♥ 2♠
Normalmente con il suo Rialzo l'Apertore promette aiuto 4º ed una Mano di 12/14PO, ma, utilizzando la convenzione Rodwell, può estendere il suo campo d'azione fino ai 15 PO ed includere anche le Mani di Apertura non meglio dichiarabili con Appoggio soltanto terzo .
Mediante l'uso convenzionale della Cheapest Bid (2♠ sul fit a cuori, 2SA sul fit a picche), il Rispondente può richiedere la conformazione della Mano dell'Apertore.
Le Risposte dell'Apertore sono a gradino su 4 gradini:
1º gradino = Appoggio terzo e max 13PO
2º gradino = Appoggio terzo e 14/15PO
3º gradino = Appoggio quarto e max 13PO
4º gradino = Appoggio quarto e 14/15PO

Usually, the Opener promises with his rise 4 fit cards and 12/14HCP, but using the Rodwell convention he can extend the range to 15HCP and include hands not well better to bid with 3 only fit cards.
Using the conventional use of the Cheapest Bid (2♠ on hearts fit, and 2NT on spades fit), the Answerer can ask for Opener's hand this way:
1º step = 3 cards fit max 13HCP
2º step = 3 cards fit 14/15HCP
3º step = 4 cards fit max 13HCP
4º step = 4 cards fit 14/15HCP
