La convenzione Baron si deve al giocatore Leo Baron di Salisbury che la incluse nel sistema dichiarativo che pubblicò verso la metà del secolo scorso.
La Baron viene applicata esclusivamente dopo l'apertura di 2SA per accertare la presenza di un eventuale fit 4-4 in un qualsiasi colore.
Il Rispondente che ricorre alla convenzione Baron ha due o tre semi quarti ed ha forza sufficiente per impegnare almeno una Manche.
Il Rispondente attiva la sequenza Baron mediante la nomina del relé di 3♣.
L'Apertore replica con la dichiarazione in ordine ascendente e progressivo di tutte le sue quarte senza superare il livello di 3SA e senza dare priorità ai semi nobili.
Quando l'Apertore, in risposta all'interrogazione, si ritrova con la sola quarta di fiori, dichiara 3SA.
In caso di ritrovamento di un fit 4-4 in un Nobile, l'Apertore è comunque tenuto a rialzare.
La differenza sostanziale con la più classica Stayman, risiede nel fatto che il Rispondente può ricorrere alla Baron anche quando presume di poter impegnare uno Slam in caso di ritrovamento di un fit 4-4 in uno dei due semi Minori e, in tal caso, può superare il livello di 3SA per rialzare le quadri dell'Apertore o nel tentativo di ritrovare un fit 4-4 a fiori.
Se il rispondente supera il livello della Manche a senza atout per ritrovare il fit 4-4 a fiori, in caso di misfit, l'apertore dichiara 4SA in sign off, mentre in caso di fit esegue la prima cue bid utile.

Baron convention was firstly developed by Leo Baron, from Salisbury, UK, who included it into his bidding system published in the 1950s.
Baron is only used after a 2NT opening to look for a 4-4 fit in any suit. In this convention, the Answerer should have two or three 4-card suits and enough force for game.
The Answerer activates Baron sequence bidding 3♣ as a relays. The Opener replies bidding his 4-card suits in ascending order, without overcoming the 3NT level and with no priority to majors.
When the Opener has only the 4 Clubs suit, replying to the relays, he bids 3NT. If a 4-4 major fit is found, the Opener shall bid his fit anyway.
The substantial difference with respect to classic Stayman is that the Answerer may use Baron convention deeming to commit a slam try, in case a 4-4 minor fit should be found; furthermore, he should overcome the 3NT level to fit Opener's diamonds or try to search a 4-4 fit in clubs.
If Answerer overcomes the 3NT level, and no minors 4-4 fit are found, the Opener bid of 4NT is a sign-off message; if fit is found, he bids the first available cue bid.
