Sir Howard Frank Triton Smith nacque il 15 ottobre del 1919 a Londra e fu un diplomatico britannico di modeste origini ma di grande carriera.

 Cavaliere dell'Ordine di San Michele e San Giorgio, grazie alla conquista di una borsa di studio fu educato al Regent Street Polytechnic e successivamente al Sidney Sussex College di Cambridge dal quale fu prelevato per far parte del brillante nugolo di matematici e intellettuali incaricati di rompere i codici nemici durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

 Howard, che ricoprì un ruolo dirigenziale nel Bletchley Park durante la seconda guerra mondiale, e a soli 23 anni sposò Mary Cropper che lavorava allo stesso progetto e che aveva 15 anni più di lui. Insieme ebbero una figlia.

 Fu ambasciatore a Praga durante l'invasione russa e nel 1979 fu nominato Direttore Generale del MI5 (il famoso servizio segreto inglese) e rimase in carica fino al 1981.

Nel 1982 si concluse tragicamente il suo felicissimo matrimonio con la morte della moglie ma, Howard ebbe un secondo altrettanto felice con la violinista Mary Penney che lo lasciò solo 4 mesi prima della sua scomparsa avvenuta il 7 maggio del 1996 nella casa che si era progettato nel Sussex.

Sir Howard Frank Triton Smith was born on October 15, 1919 in London and was a British diplomat of modest origins but of great career.

Knight of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, thanks to the award of a scholarship was educated at the Regent Street Polytechnic and later at Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge from which he was taken to be part of the brilliant group of mathematicians and intellectuals in charge of breaking the enemy codes during the Second World War.

Howard, who played a leading role in Bletchley Park during the Second World War, and at only 23 years married Mary Cropper who worked on the same project and who was 15 years older than him. Together they had a daughter.

He was ambassador to Prague during the Russian invasion and in 1979 he was appointed General Director of MI5 (the famous English secret service) and remained in office until 1981.

In 1982 his happy marriage ended tragically with the death of his wife but, Howard had a second marriage equally happy with the violinist Mary Penney who left him only 4 months before his death on May 7, 1996 in the house that was designed himself in Sussex.
