L'ungherese Franz Liszt (Ferenc in magiaro) è nato il 22 ottobre del 1811 a Raiding una città austriaca non lontana dal confine ed è stato uno dei maggiori pianisti, compositori, organisti e direttori d'orchestra dell'800.
Studiò e suonò a Vienna e Parigi, viaggiò in tutta l'Europa tenendo concerti un po' ovunque. Fu uno dei grandi virtuosi del pianoforte dell'Ottocento, rivoluzionò la tecnica pianistica e il rapporto tra pubblico ed esecutore.
Fu legato a Fryderyk Chopin da amicizia e stima. Nel 1865 divenne accolito nell'ordine francescano della Chiesa cattolica. Era il suocero di Richard Wagner, avendo quest'ultimo sposato sua figlia Cosima. È stato inoltre abate nella Cattedrale di Albano Laziale.
Marie d'Agoult, che abbandonò il marito e due figlie per fuggire con lui, gli diede tre figli: Blandine, Cosima e Daniel prima di essere lasciata per Caroline Von Sayn-Wittgenstein anche lei già sposata con una figlia.
Quando nel 1862 morì la primogenita Blandine facendo seguito alla precedente morte del figlio ventenne avvenuta tre anni prima, cercò conforto nella religione e tre anni più tardi ricevette la tonsura e gli ordini minori. In questo periodo morì anche Caroline.
Grazie alle sue mani di dimensioni superiore al normale mostrò il suo straordinario talento già prima di compiere i dieci anni ed era con le sue lunghe dita affusolate che reggeva anche le carte da gioco quando si dilettava non poco con il Whist.
Liszt scomparve a Bayreuth in Germania il 31 luglio del 1886 di polmonite.
