Eugénie Houssaye is known for being the first woman to play bridge in France.

Eugenie Ritter Houssaye was born May 21, 1855 in Nevada City in the heart of California by a wealthy family as Father William Ritter a Philadelphian who had made fortunes in the West first with mining and then as an entrepreneur in the construction of elaborate works hydraulics attached to the mining industry.

At the death of his father killed by a band of robbers never caught, Eugenie, who had studied in a sophisticated French language school (the diplomatic language of the time), moved with her mother shortly before in London and then in Paris.

The rich Henry Houssaye (February 24, 1848 - September 23, 1911) met her in Paris in 1875 and  after only eight months married her, wit the wedding witness Victor Hugo.

A dozen years later Henry learned the bridge in the Greek colony of Paris, a game that at that time struggled not to overlap the Whist.

Thanks to the interest of Gaston Jollivet, a dear friend of Henry, the bridge first landed at the Circus of Artistic Union and there in the principal clubs of the capital where, however, no woman had ever been admitted.

The refined Eugenie had soon shared the husband's new passion, albeit limited by force, to a private bridge, until in 1903 the couple founded a private circle called "The Salon de Madame Houssaye" thet was housed in a part of the spouse's ownership.

It was precisely those years when fashion, or rather, the madness of the bridge, exploded in Paris so that receiving an invitation from Mrs. Eugenie became the greatest aspiration of every Parisian in the beautiful society.
