George Sturgis Coffin è nato l'8 settembre del 1903 a Waltham in Massachusetts, una cittadina pochi chilometri ad Ovest di Boston dove si spento il 12 marzo del 1994 presso l'Ospedale Waltham-Weston per complicanze cardiache.

Viveva nella vicina Belmont, era sposato ed aveva una figlia.
Dopo essersi laureato nel 1928 all'Harvard College, ha gestito una azienda che si è occupata della distribuzione e della vendita di articoli connessi con il gioco delle carte e, per quanto riguarda il gioco del bridge, ricordiamo tra le sue numerose opere "Bridge Play Four Classics", una tetralogia sul gioco della carta, e "Bridge play from A to Z".
George che ha pubblicato oltre 100 libri sui giochi di carte, è stato per lungo tempo componente della redazione dell'Enciclopedia del Bridge ed è stato un co-fondatore della American Bridge Teachers Association (ABTA) e l'inventore degli Instant Match Point.
In particolare, è ricordato come avido collezionista e brillante compositore di problemi a Doppio Morto.
Hanno fatto storia i suoi due libri che le raccolgono "Sure Tricks" (1948) e "Double Dummy Bridge" (1967).
George Sturgis Coffin, born in Waltham, Massachusetts, on September 8, 1903 and
dies at Waltham-Weston Hospital near his home in Belmont on March 12, 1994.
A descendant of Tristrum's son Stephen Coffin, he was a 1928 graduate of Harvard and 1931 winner of The Bridge World international problem solving contest. He was also co-founder of the American Bridge Teachers Association (ABTA).
Coffin was a famous author, publisher and distributor of bridge books and supplies. Author of more than 200 books that included bridge, poker, cribbage and other card games, he was particularly known for his exceptional technique in bridge endplays (eliminations, squeezes and coups) resulting in his nickname "Endplays" Coffin, after his classic books of the same title.
He also wrote about fungi, on which he was an authority.
In particular, he produced two classic collection of double dummy and other problems. The first was Sure Tricks, published in 1948 and the second was Double Dummy Bridge (1967).
